February

For such a short month, February is full of activity. Mom mentioned Super Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Shrove Tuesday. My calendar also lists Washington's birthday, Lincoln's birthday and President's day. In 1880 Washington's birthday was celebrated on the 22nd (his birthday) in Washington D. C., in 1885 it was expanded to all government offices. Congress on January 1, 1971 shifted the holiday to the 3rd Monday. Lincoln's birthday was never celebrated as a holiday. So now all presidents are celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February.

We also have Valentine's Day which we celebrate on February 14. On this day more chocolates and flowers are purchased than any other holiday. One of my favorite holidays, I don't count calories, just pig out on the chocolates. This year there are 29 days in February so we have a leap year. Plan to do something special on this extra day.
