Stuck on Fruit

This is too cute. My daughter-in-law gave me a pattern for pincushions. Besides the pear, there are also an apple, tomato and strawberry. I will have a whole fruit bowl when I get them all made. The great thing about this pincushion is that the leaves are a perfect place for needles...mine always get lost in my other pincushions.

The fabric was left over from a craft apron that my daughter-in-law made for me for Christmas...she was gracious enough to include the scraps! Lucky me! Mom

Aprons Return!

When I was growing up all adults in the kitchen wore aprons. When my sister and I got to help a dish towel was tied around our waists. One Christmas my Mother made both of us a small apron to wear when we helped. This Christmas I made my daughter and grand-daughters aprons. I was surprised they went over so well.

Aprons were made from flour sacks when I was a kid. They were 100% cotton and came in various sizes. They held flour, sugar and chicken feed. The earlier sacks were white, off white and often had ink trade marks. Mother would scrub them clean and hang them out in the sun to whiten more. It wasn't until the 1920's and 1930's that the sacks started coming in prints. I remember my Mother telling my Dad what colored sacks to get. The chicken feed sacks came in prints with no ink trade marks. These sacks had a sewn closing which after many tries you could unravel. Many of our dresses were made from flour sacks. In the 1940's the sacks came with paper labels which were soaked off.

Mother got her patterns free from the newspaper and they often had big pockets (which held hankies, candy, odds and ends) long ties and fit any size. Today I paid $8.00 for the pattern above and was surprised at the number of apron patterns for sale. Hooray for aprons. Grandmother

Bodhi Bear

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of having a dog of my very own.  I wanted one so much that every birthday and Christmas I asked for one. My mother got a kick out of making me dog-shaped birthday cakes instead of actually getting me a dog (a joke that I still don't find very funny).  After 25 long years of yearning and waiting, I finally have one!  Well, sort of.  I guess you could say she's on loan from my husband's parents. We took her as a favor and because we wanted her.

Isn't she cute?  Unfortunately no one told me how much work a dog would be.  Maybe that's why my mother made dogs out of cake because then she wouldn't have to clean up after them! Daughter.

Look what Gramps is doing!!!

Be careful what you say. Gramps made the statement he would like to learn to play the sax. That was all it took for some of us to get the idea of purchasing learn to play music books, easy song books and some reeds for his Christmas. So then we had to find the sax which our youngest son played in school some thirty years ago. We dug it out and our son-in-law and daughter took it to the music shop to see what replacement pads would cost. After getting a $400 to $500 estimate, Gramps decided to do it himself. Now he has it spread all over the dining table and is slowly replacing the pads after ordering a "do it yourself" book and repair kit. His days are filled with shellac and leather pads and finding joy in what he is doing. PS I just hope he gets it finished by next Saturday. We are expecting our Daughter, Granddaughter and her husband and we will need the table. Grandmother

Thinking Spring

"No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow"
Proverb from Guinea

That thought sure keeps me going during the winter and for the past couple of days we have had wind, clouds and cold. But a day like today...absolutely gorgeous with a high close to 60...makes me feel like I should be in the garden.

Right now I will just have to content myself with looking through my flower catalogs, highlighting plants I want and dog-earring the pages. Of course by the time I get done most of the pages are turned and there are yellow lines through more plants than I can afford. Hey, I can always dream, can't I?? Mom

Recommended Reading

I just finished reading this book. It was interesting reading and I have to say that there were times when the critic in me wanted to dismiss the story, but I forced myself to have an open mind and I found myself getting more involved with the story. It is a book that I could probably read several times and each time learn something different. If you have a belief in God, this is definitely a book I would recommend. In March I am going to take an 5 week course on an
indepth study of this book and I am already looking forward to it. It is a story that will stay with you! Mom

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009!!!

It is a frosty morning this New Year's Day here on the Western Slope of Colorado. The sun is just beginning to break through the fog and we should be in the 30's today. I can remember much colder New Year's in the years past and also several times not feeling too well as we celebrated the year's end and the new year beginning. Often dancing the hours away and drinking until the clock struck 12. Now we are in bed by 10 and greet the new year with coffee in the morning. May this New Year be good to all of us. Grandmother

I Can't Believe It!

It happens every year! When I can finally sit down and enjoy the Christmas decorations, it is time to put them away.

This Christmas was the first one we didn't have any kids home. They went to their in-laws for Christmas. But that doesn't mean that I don't put on the handmade ornaments that they made for me when they were little. If I ever have grandchildren then I will add those to the collection. My tree is always the same every year. It has the kids' ornaments, my husband's grandmother's hand crocheted ornaments and my grandpa's carved wooden ornaments. It's not very trendy but it stirs memories.

Decorating the tree also reminds me of some of the ones we had when I was growing up...like the year my Mom (aka Grandmother) decided to flock the tree. We had this white monstrosity covered in a fake sprayed on snow in the living room with colored balls on it and in front of it was a colored wheel with a light so that when it was turned on we had a spectrum of colors shining on the tree...kind of like our own disco tree. My brothers and I thought it was great but she only did that one year and it is probably a good thing. Funny how some trends last and others (thankfully) go. Now it's time to take this tree down and look toward 2009 and see what new happenings will occur and which old things will stay on. Happy New Year! Mom
